Federal prosecutors on Friday announced charges against five people in connection with a Chicago-based scheme that held armed robberies so the alleged victims could apply for US immigration visas reserved for victims of legal crimes…

Officials believe that hundreds of people, including out-of-towners, posed as customers at thousands of businesses throughout Chicago and elsewhere, all hoping to gain favorable immigration status by being “victims” of pre-arranged “armed robberies.”

During a shooting in Bucktown last year, one of the “robbers” accidentally fired his gun, seriously injuring a liquor store clerk, according to another source. During that caper alone, five “customers” were “robbed.”
