Yamada Kurumi, a client, works in a brothel to earn enough money to visit clubs, which she does about once a week. She has had boyfriends in the past but finds hosts more fun. She’s not sure if she’ll want an office job after college or pursue sex work, which pays better. “Many people start to lose contact with friends when they are immersed in the host clubs,” said Ms. Yamada. “My host is already a part of my daily life…If I get a regular job, I probably won’t be able to see him anymore. That scares me.”
