I expand on this theme in my recent Bloomberg column, here is part one:
So I have a humble suggestion for anyone interested in business literature: Read books about certain businesses or industries that you already know a lot about. That way, you will have enough background knowledge to make the book meaningful. Of course most people don’t work for a company or industry that is big or famous enough to have books about it, so I have a related suggestion: You will learn a lot about management by reading books about sports teams and music teams.
And this:
Many music and sports books are not only written for die-hard fans, but written for them as well with obsessed fans. Traditional business letters, in contrast, are often written to get consulting work or on the speaking circuit. The motivation is not to offend anyone and to reveal “normal level” details, instead of saying anything real that might be difficult to explain. The result is a section of the bookstore that can be difficult to read.
Lots of interest in the link, recommended.
