Don’t laugh, but basically you want to eat at restaurants with beautiful women. And waterfront views.
You may remember that those are often the opposite of proper recommendations. But in Cape Town, there is no coherent “mom and pop” restaurant sector, based on recent Asian or Latino immigrants, or based on the existing middle class. You just want to go to beautiful, beautiful places. And you don’t need my list, many sources can tell you what those are.
The economics of that are simple. There is a well-defined class of people with a lot of money, and the best restaurants do everything they can to target them, including ocean views. That’s the best way to get good food here, arguably the only way. You can’t actually “argue against inequality,” even if you think you could.
Generally you should order seafood, and (as in Chile) suspect any menu item with a cream sauce, which will be on the creamy side. You may see a bunch of Afrikaans words in the English language menus, don’t worry just download your ChatGPT app and enjoy the feeling of strangeness.
I had barbecue and bbq in a black town, and it wasn’t bad. But I’d say you’ll want the social experience more than the food. You will also find South African side dishes, such as maize meal, which may not appear in popular restaurants. So do that if you can, I also found the experience safe and not stressful.
The prices here are very low, and the best food can be less than half of the comparable cost in the United States or Europe, maybe even 3 times lower. Wherever you go, make sure they give you a seat facing the water!
