At the time of data collection, Cloudflare said it dropped 6.8% of all web application traffic. It defines throttled traffic as any “traffic that is blocked or challenged by Cloudflare. The specific type of threat and the appropriate mitigation method depends on many factors such as the application’s potential security gaps, the nature of the victim’s business and the attacker’s intentions.”
Examples of attacks during the study period, it says, include the Anonymous Sudan group, which launches “politically motivated DDoS attacks against banks, universities, hospitals, airports, social networks, government agencies and others around the world.”
In the release, the company’s founder and CEO Matthew Prince said that “web applications are rarely built with security in mind. However, we use them every day for all kinds of important tasks, which makes them rich targets for hackers.”
