The author is Tom Wilkinson, and the text below says Notgeld in the Picture Economy of German Inflation, 1914-1923. Notgeld, or emergency money, was usually issued privately to make up for government deficits at the time.
It’s hard to think of a book that “suits” me more. This book includes history, financial economics, private currency issuance, and artistic renderings of private notes. You can see a lot of desperation in those pictures, and clearly the 19th century seems like a long time ago. I read this as soon as I arrived.
