An addiction crisis has plagued Sierra Leone, one of the poorest countries in the world, fueled by the increased use of “kush”, a toxic compound of psychoactive substances. As the West African country struggles to grow its economy, thousands of young unemployed people have turned to the use of marijuana to fill their days.
The kush problem is part of the growing trend of drug use across Africa, especially among the youth of the continent.
“People are addicted to escape,” said Abass Wurie, a medical scientist in Freetown who studies the effects of drugs on the heart and kidneys.
Here’s more from Aanu Adeoye at the FT. Is this a new trend in the poorest countries, as the prices of addictive drugs drop dramatically?
