Who uses ChatGPT?

We study the adoption of ChatGPT, an icon of Generative AI, using a large survey linked to complete registration data in Denmark. When we examine 100,000 employees from 11 exposed jobs, we write that ChatGPT is widespread, but there is already a great inequality. Women are 20 percent less likely to use this tool. Furthermore, despite its ability to uplift less experienced workers, ChatGPT users discovered more before its arrival. Employees see huge productivity potential in ChatGPT but are often constrained by employer restrictions and the need for training. Informing employees about ChatGPT’s expert evaluation changes employee beliefs but has limited effects on actual adoption.
