Game protection
The French government’s national cybersecurity agency, the Agence national de la sécurité des systèmes d’information (ANSSI), is overseeing a major effort to keep the Paris cyber Olympics safe. Since mid-2023 it has held several public awareness conferences and crisis planning exercises with many stakeholders across the government, security, and sports environment. Eviden (a division of Atos, a leading IT provider for the games) manages the Olympics’ cybersecurity services and operations, “which can be delivered to the Games’ dedicated SOC, as well as 17 SOCs around the world,” according to the report. of IDC.
It’s a far cry from the jaw-dropping leap made by Japan’s cyber security minister ahead of the 2020 Tokyo summer Olympics. Just two years before the games were scheduled, Yoshitaka Sakurada admitted that he didn’t use computers and seemed confused about how USB drives worked.
Despite years of planning, anything can happen until the eleventh hour. Just before the opening ceremonies of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, Russian-sponsored hackers unleashed a malware attack dubbed Olympic Destroyer. It took down the official Olympics website and Wi-Fi platform, caused significant damage to broadcast operations and the on-site media center, and prevented certain audiences from entering events where tickets could not be printed.
