7. Release of data
Often overlooked, data leakage is a significant threat to cloud security. “Data leakage refers to the electronic transfer of data from a cloud location to an unauthorized external location,” said John Henley, principal consultant at technology research and advisory firm ISG. “This can happen in a number of ways, including exploiting a vulnerability, misconfiguration, or compromised credentials.”
Data processing can lead to the theft of sensitive information, such as personal identification data, financial information, intellectual property, or confidential company data. “The effects of data releases on surveillance, remediation, and legal actions can be long-term and far-reaching,” Henley warned.
Opponents may use stolen intellectual property or trade secrets to gain a competitive advantage that leads to future erosion of market share or the ability to dominate the market. Meanwhile, operational disruptions can cause downtime, lost productivity, and costs incurred to rebuild operations.
