Angler used advanced evasion techniques, including exploring virtual machines and sandboxing environments to avoid detection by security researchers, leading to its popularity and importance in the cybersecurity community. Angler’s operations came to an abrupt halt in mid-2016, reportedly due to legal action in Russia against cybercriminals allegedly linked to Angler.
It started charging in 2023
A Belarusian-Ukrainian hacker was indicted for the first time in the District of New Jersey in June 2023, for using fraud and other means to deliver malware, phishing, and Internet scams to “millions of unsuspecting Internet users in the United States and elsewhere,” since October. 2013 to March 2022.
The case, however, was opened only on August 12, 2024. The case against Kedariya included two other cybercriminals, Belarussian and Ukrainian national Maksim Silnikau, and Russian national Andrei Tarasov.
