From an operational perspective, companies may need to change their processes to collect and report the necessary data, which may lead to changes in AI management, data management processes, cybersecurity measures, and internal reporting protocols, Dai added.
The extent of BIS’s actions based on the reporting is not yet certain, but the agency has previously played a key role in preventing software vulnerabilities from entering the US and restricting the export of critical semiconductor hardware, according to Suseel Menon, director of operations at Everest Group.
“Determining the impact of this reporting will take time and further clarification on the level of reporting required,” Menon said. “But given that many large enterprises are still in the early stages of implementing AI in their operations and products, the near- and medium-term results are small.”
