This paper reports results from the first US nationally representative survey of artificial intelligence adoption in the workplace and home. By August 2024, 39 percent of US people aged 18-64 are using AI for productivity. More than 24 percent of employees used it at least once a week before an exam, and nearly one in nine used it every day. Historical data on the adoption and introduction of mass market products suggests that the adoption of US manufacturing AI has been faster than the adoption of the personal computer and the Internet. Generative AI is a general-purpose technology, in the sense that it is used in a variety of jobs and tasks at work and at home.
That’s from a new paper by Alexander Bick, Adam Blandin, and David J. Deming, copy not posted here, blog post about it here.
