15 jobs that will shrink the fastest in the next decade

It’s good to know which jobs are expected to grow dramatically, but just as important – if not more so – to know which jobs have declining outlooks.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks that information directly. And while employment from 2023 to 2033 is expected to increase by 4% in all occupations, most occupations are expected to decline rapidly.

The following are the positions that will see the worst rate of change, according to the BLS.

15. Order clerks

Order clerks have a variety of administrative duties. Those responsibilities include receiving and processing incoming business orders for materials, merchandise or services such as repairs. They work with customers to provide receipts, pricing and shipping information.

Members of this niche group work with designers and other clients to format and proofread their text and images for print. This may include both digital and photo editing, and these workers may even produce printing plates. They may work for media and marketing companies.

Prepress technicians and staff generally require a postsecondary degree.

This category of workers is often assigned the task of setting up, operating or maintaining drilling machines that work with metal or plastic pieces. The most common industry for them is aerospace product and parts manufacturing, as well as machine shops. The industry that pays the most for these workers, however, is utility system construction.

As the BLS title for this job group aptly suggests, installers are tasked with moving and/or installing mobile homes or other prefabricated structures. States that use mobile home installers include Texas, Washington and Pennsylvania.

The activities of these assemblers include building, assembling or rebuilding machines such as wind turbines, engines or other machines used in industries including textiles, paper production, construction and extraction.

The auto parts manufacturing industry is a common field for assemblers, but there is a lot of money to be made in engine, turbine and transmission manufacturing.

Top earners can make up to $77,230, or more than $37 an hour. High earners are more likely to work in aerospace and parts manufacturing, but employers are the most common employers.
