The entire IT infrastructure of India’s Uttarakhand state came to a standstill on Friday after a malware was detected in systems in the country’s Data Centre. The shutdown affected several important services, including government websites, the Chief Minister’s helpline numbers, and land registration services.
Officials, suspecting a cyberattack, launched an investigation into the breach, and IT Secretary Nitesh Jha ordered the shutdown of all services to minimize potential damage. Key systems, such as the State Wide Area Network (SWAN) and Secure Internet Service, have gone offline, affecting day-to-day operations throughout the state.
“During the routine scan on Gandhi Jayanti [October 2]malware was detected on some machines at the State Data Center. According to the advice of the National Informatics Center (NIC), Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), and other experts, all machines in the data center have been shut down to prevent the spread,” the state government said in a statement.
