Chinese researchers break RSA encryption with a quantum computer

The researchers did not stop at RSA. They also attacked key algorithms in the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), including the Present, Rectangle, and Gift-64 block ciphers.

“Our findings demonstrate that D-Wave’s quantum technology can effectively guide encryption systems that protect sensitive information around the world,” they said in their paper.

“Many of the cryptographic algorithms businesses rely on today, such as RSA and ECC, are based on mathematical problems that are computationally difficult to solve efficiently,” said Prabhjyot Kaur, senior analyst at Everest Group. “However, the advent of quantum computing threatens the security of these algorithms. The need for robust quantum-safe or post-quantum cryptographic solutions is becoming more apparent as quantum computing advances. “
