What do panda rental contracts look like?

Officials cannot discuss panda illness, death, disease or “any other important matters” without first consulting their Chinese counterparts, whose views will be “fully respected.”

“In cases where the release of relevant information to a foreign country or the admission of interviews with the media is necessary, it will be used only after communication and consultation between the parties and consensus has been reached,” the contracts read. “And when no consensus is reached, no news will be released.”

In a statement, the San Diego Zoo said it is common practice for partners to discuss animal welfare “and understand each other before sharing updates publicly.”

Previous contracts had no such “information management” restrictions.

Here’s another from Mara Hvistendahl at the NYT, which is interesting throughout.
