Years ago, the CISO was very much an island that lived in their own environment, suited to a certain type of person, but that gives leadership influence and collaboration. These qualities become highly valued by organizations when hiring a new CISO. “They want CISOs who have the personality to gather followers who will buy the security road and continue the journey,” said O’Leary.
In his experience, technical expertise is important for the modern CISO, but so is the appreciation that security posture means different things to different people, whether it is the CIO or the CEO. This requires being on top of all evolving threats, presenting information in ways that align with leadership, and promoting a vision of security throughout the organization. “An outstanding CISO has a small backbone because he can have tough conversations, influence and mentor effectively, and understand his audience, while pushing their business development agenda,” he says.
