What happened to the football crisis?

Here’s a great clip from New York by Reeves Wiedeman, here’s a clip from yours truly:

When I contacted Tyler Cowen, he said that his prediction of the death of football ended because he did not understand people’s concerns about their own lives and the lives of others. “Covid has changed my mind on this,” he told me via email. “Many people just do stupid things, like not getting vaccinated, even if their lives are at risk.”

Also:

Participation in youth football declined steadily for more than a decade after the news about CTE began to break, but it is on the rise again. About a million boys still play high school football — twice as many as play basketball or soccer — and it’s still possible in much of the country to sign up your 5-year-old to be a linebacker. Many surveys of parents find that they understand that there are risks but they also do not want to prevent their children from playing.

Also:

Fans, it seems, have chosen to believe that the NFL has done as much as it can. “They’ve dealt with a lot of moral issues — things that have made them look bad — and now all of a sudden the story is ‘It’s just sad,'” Nowinski said. “The thing people are missing is that football has become more ethical, but it’s not that safe.”

It is worth pondering.
