Musk’s expected cost-cutting hacks could weaken America’s cybersecurity

Some experts argue that it doesn’t matter that DOGE is only an advisory arm, given Trump’s bow to Musk, his campaign financial contributions and the strong promotion of his intervention in X helped ensure his victory. “Whether or not the door is not the question here,” David Brumley, CEO of Mayhem Security, tells CSO. “Musk has access to Trump. Trump has put in a bunch of inexperienced people. They will need to get advice. They will just follow his advice.”

DOGE’s recommended cuts, if implemented, would have a major impact on the cybersecurity efforts of many US government agencies. “The key to cybersecurity is that they’re not going to come in and say, ‘We need less cybersecurity,'” Brumley said.

“That is not what we will see. We will see him pushing the edges where the quality and security of the Internet are closely related. He will begin to ignore and remove officials responsible for enforcing cybersecurity laws and recommendations. I think Elon will get rid of the people in the government asking questions,” as he did on Twitter when he cut 80% of the workforce, including most of the cybersecurity, trust, and security staff after acquiring the company.
