Why Italy Sells So Much Spyware

Interesting analysis:

While much of the focus has been on sophisticated, flawless spyware developed by companies such as Israel’s NSO Group, the Italian spyware market has managed to operate under the radar especially with cheap tools. According to a document by the Italian Ministry of Justice, from December 2022 the country’s law enforcement agencies could hire spies for 150 euros a day, regardless of which vendor they use, and without the high costs of acquiring things that could be prohibitive.

As a result, thousands of spyware operations have been carried out by Italian authorities in recent years, according to a report from Riccardo Coluccini, a respected Italian journalist specializing in espionage and hacking.

Italian spyware is cheap and easy to use, which makes it widely used. And Italian companies have been in this market for a long time.
