Network problems delay flights on two oneworld Alliance airlines

Earlier in the week, American Airlines was forced to ground flights for up to an hour on Christmas Eve, one of the busiest travel days of the year.

American asked the US Federal Aviation Administration to issue a “nationwide ground” at 6:50 a.m. Eastern time on Tuesday, preventing any of its planes from flying. The advisory was lifted an hour later.

Merchant technical problem

The airline blamed the problems on a “seller’s technical problem” in a message posted on its official X/Twitter account. The issue was with communications equipment owned by DXC Technologies, according to an American Airlines statement cited by multiple media outlets.

Neither DXC nor American immediately responded to our requests for comment.

American has been working with DXC to modernize its mainframe systems using a devops approach, according to its internal technology team’s blog.

With a different modern system, it has also modified its analytical tools, so it should be well placed to assess the effects of Tuesday morning’s blackout.
