“Regulatory bodies, such as the EU’s NIS2 directive, are now designating certain manufacturing domains – computers, electronics, machinery, vehicles, and transport – as priority sectors, according to the enhanced requirements for cyber security,” explains Hexagon’s Bellal.
7. APT Campaigns
Last year, nine out of 13 (69%) APT campaigns received by Cyfirma targeted the manufacturing sector, peaking in September with steady activity since then, the company reported.
Key threat actors behind these attacks include Chinese groups, Russian groups (FIN7, Gamaredon), Pakistani APT36, Iranian Fox Kitten, and the North Korean Lazarus Group. The attack affected 15 countries with important manufacturing economies, including the US, UK, Japan, Taiwan, and India, with increased activity in Vietnam.
8. DDoS attacks
Netscout’s 1H24 DDoS Threat Intelligence report revealed that the manufacturing industry – and related sectors such as construction – are among the main targets of DDoS attacks today.
“As it continues to embrace digital technology and expand its digital landscape, the manufacturing industry is increasingly vulnerable to DDoS attacks,” said Richard Hummel, Netscout’s intelligence leader. “Its significant contribution to the economy, along with little tolerance for downtime and complex digital environments, makes the manufacturing sector – and related sectors – a target for threat actors.”
