It is not clear what the reporter is talking about. To confirm, I went to my regular Walmart but didn’t see a single third-party ad—other than the brand names and slogans of the products on the shelves. I didn’t see the screen or hear any advertisement. The retailer sells advertising to third-party sellers on its Walmart Marketplace website, however. What’s the problem anyway with Walmart selling advertising?
Information related to the interest you may have in trade is a part of life in any supranational or orderly society, especially in a successful society. Such information is certainly more beneficial to the masses than government propaganda. Does private advertising mean you are a brand? Are you a Google product if it sells the data you provide through its free services? According to Merriam-Webster, a product is “something (such as a service) that is sold or sold.” The slave would be the product. A free man is not like that. Even figuratively, you cannot be a slave to salesmen whose proposals you are free to refuse without threat of punishment.
Referring to their concept of “wage slavery,” Marxists would say that Walmart workers are slaves, which is absurd: at any time, they can either work for someone else or work for themselves. If Walmart’s employees are not slaves, it is even more obvious that its customers are not, even if they are exposed to advertising when they choose to visit the company’s physical or virtual sites.
