Justin Lam, senior research analyst covering information security at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said that addressing security and privacy risks is a common business practice and should not necessarily prevent the use of tools that are shown to provide benefits to users and businesses. “Enterprises are faced with the challenges of balancing user privacy, user productivity, internal risk management, surveillance, and compliance,” he said. “That said, they should also consider what productivity gains can be made with tools like Recall and Copilot.”

Others, however, have warned that businesses should avoid using this feature altogether.

“While the ability to search your usage history can save you time and increase productivity, I advise the risk for small businesses to use this feature is too great,” said McKee at SonicWall.

“First and foremost: if you can, don’t allow it,” says Forrester’s Pollard. “I would like it to be eliminated through group policy if there is one. If the feature is active at any point, I’ll also want telemetry to let me know it’s active so I can figure out if the user intends to activate it or if an adversary has. [so] as part of their information gathering efforts.”
