CISM certification involves several steps, so the obvious question arises: Is it worth it? If you are interested in a management position – and the high salaries command the positions – obtaining the CISM certificate is a good way to show your expertise, as well as your seriousness about your work and your ambitions. Job titles associated with CISM credentials include information security manager, information risk compliance specialist, and, of course, CIO.
According to ZipRecruiter, CISMs make an average of about $95,000 per year. SkillSoft, however, puts the median salary for a CISM holder at $167,396 in its IT Skills and Salary Report, among the top 15 certifications in all of IT.
CISM vs. CISSP
What is the difference between CISM and CISSP, one of the advanced cybersecurity certifications? Both CISM and CISSP require technical infosec savvy, but CISM specifically requires you to demonstrate that you understand the incentives around information security from a business perspective, rather than just a technical perspective. It focuses mainly on managers and those who wish to be promoted to management. The CISSP certification, in contrast, demonstrates in-depth technical knowledge over a wide range of security domains, although it does involve some management responsibilities.
