“What’s Wrong With Depression and Its Treatment”

I do not endorse these views, but it is interesting to ponder:

  • Depression is not a disease or disorder but rather an evolutionary adaptation to serve a purpose

  • Depression is more common than what is now recognized as the “normal” type.

  • Antidepressants drive neurotransmitter levels so high that homeostatic regulation kicks in

  • Antidepressants may suppress symptoms in a way that increases the risk of relapse

  • Psychotherapy works by making maturity effective and “de-centering” self-criticism

  • Adding antidepressants may interfere with any lasting effect that psychotherapy may have

These appear in a new paper by Steven D. Hollon.
