Editor’s Note: This story originally appeared on Flippa.

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in people starting new businesses.

Many people are exploring business opportunities, but many do not realize how much these new businesses can actually earn.

To help prospective business owners better understand their profit opportunities, Flippa – the largest online marketplace for buying and selling businesses – analyzed its internal data of more than 25,000 profitable businesses listed on its platform over the past two years.

The financial performance of online businesses varies greatly by business type. E-commerce, service-oriented, and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) businesses are often the top earners compared to marketplace, mobile app, and content-based businesses.

The following is a breakdown of average monthly income by business age and business type. The monthly income of the top quartile and the top 10% of businesses are also included in the content list.
