Words from Ross Douthat – A REVOLUTION On the Edge

As a holiday reflection, consider that many of the things that fill people with understandable fear about our nation’s future – nationalism, extremism, extremism, tensions across cultural and moral and theological gulfs – are also signs of national vitality in their own way. It’s great that so many people from so many different backgrounds still find America’s future worth fighting for. It’s great that freaks, weirdos and eccentrics have an increasing share of our politics and rational allies. It’s great that the right and the upper are both calling for a rethinking of the country’s narrative, as inconsistent as those thoughts may seem. We are faced with a difficult situation in the world and a bad, seemingly late choice for a king in November – but many of our missteps are indicators of the healthy discontent and comfortable decay of developed societies. From many points of view, American exploration seems to be in danger – but it is better to be in danger than to be settled, bad, stagnant.

Maybe these are the things you say to yourself when you’ve just had your fifth child. But I think there is a good chance, a very good chance, that my children will inherit an America that is very different from any of our past golden or silver ages, but still the best place to be born and live and thrive in this age of the world. .
