It’s wrong! In theory, API communication sounds great, but it’s very limited in practice. For it to work properly, vendors must open their APIs to other vendors. Sometimes they do, opening some APIs and not others, sometimes they refuse to do so. Even if they open up their APIs, there are still problems.
Let’s say a customer wants their risk management vendor to be integrated with endpoint detection and response (EDR) tools, and they have a mix of Crowdstrike, SentinelOne, and Trend Micro EDR installed. A VM vendor will need to work with all three vendors and integrate three different API sets. A lot of work for the same purpose.
Cybersecurity technology has a connector problem
As I see it, cybersecurity technology in general has a fundamental connector problem that stems from the industry’s conflict between philanthropy and capitalism. Unfortunately for all of us, capitalism is winning in large numbers as vendors protect their technology to gain a competitive advantage.
