*Why Machines Learn: The Cool Maths Behind Modern AI*

Written by Anil Ananthaswamy, an excellent book, it will make the end of the year a great list of fiction. It focuses on machine learning and its offshoots, and you can read the story even if you don’t follow all the matrix algebra and calculus. It is also the best book I know of how science progresses by laying down different “bricks”, and then putting them all together into a possible solution. Recommended.
