“I think [dismantling CISA] it would be catastrophic,” Michael Daniel, CEO of the Cyber Threat Alliance and former Special Assistant to President Obama and Coordinator for Cybersecurity on the National Security Council Staff, told CSO. “Sane people can argue about how effective CISA has been, but we have literally worked for decades to build an effective cyber security organization for the US government. And we finally get there with CISA. Making major changes in that organization now makes no sense to me.”
Daniel says that repealing CISA would be a major threat to US national security. “I think it would greatly increase the cyber risk in the United States. It would put us at a great risk. It would seriously undermine the cyber security of our critical infrastructure, put many Americans at risk of financial loss, and ultimately [become] a threat to public health and safety.”
Chris Painter, a former US government official and cybersecurity expert at the State Department, agrees. “I don’t think that makes sense at all,” he told CSO. “CISA and its predecessor at DHS had growing pains, to be sure, but it is starting to hit its stride. It is important to have that organization there as part of the community to work to protect critical infrastructure, working hand in glove with other government agencies, including State, DOJ, DOD, and others. “
