Fusion energy currently faces many of the same opportunities and challenges as the biotechnology industry of the 1970s: exciting scientific and engineering breakthroughs that could change human history, with adequate public and private funding, effective business models, and appropriate regulatory oversight. . Many lessons can be learned from the last 50 years of the history of the biotechnology industry, leading to five proposed programs to accelerate progress in integration: the creation of an intellectual-property university organization; establishment of fusion power milestones and fusion rating agencies to ensure their success; the development of new financial and business methods to finance the various stages of integration progress; an integrated program of two-way outreach, education, and communication at all levels from K–12 to policymakers and the general public; and managing integration programs as part of a broader ecosystem. Applying these historical lessons today can accelerate the development of integration to the same level of commercial success and human impact achieved by biotech.
That’s according to a new paper by Andrew W. Lo and Dennis Whyte.
