The Swedish Prosecutor’s Office announced that the preliminary investigation carried out with the Swedish Security Service (Säpo) concluded that the regime of Iran, using the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), carried out a special campaign against targets in Sweden. Hackers allegedly broke into a Swedish company that runs a major SMS service last summer and sent 15,000 messages seeking “revenge on Quran burners.”
“Through the investigation, we were able to find out who the Iranian hackers were who committed the data breach,” said Mats Ljungqvist, chief prosecutor of the Prosecutor’s Office, in a press release.
“We succeeded in breaking this down at the corresponding individual level and we can then connect it to the Revolutionary Guard, which is also directly connected to the Iranian regime,” said Fredrik Hallström, operations manager at Säpo, to the TT news agency.
