Start spreading the news, you’re leaving today
I want to be a part of you, New York, New York -Fred Ebb, “New York, New York”
And to make the title and epigraph clear:
It would be the best thing you’ll hear all night (although not, as I wrote: “Personally, I expect this debate to be more interesting than the Presidential debate, given the cries of previous soldiers. But Vance wrote a book , and Walz’s wife, also a teacher, had 40 students (!) on his high school debate team, so maybe something has changed”).
Host: CBS.
Time: 9:00pm ET.
Location: CBS Broadcast Center, New York City.
Rules:
Let’s put up a good fight here. No grabbing, no punching, no biting, poking, or hitting rabbits. You will break when I say break. And if you’re decorated, you’ll get a count of ten to get back on your feet.
Oh, wait. Sorry for the mistake. Forbes:
The rules for tonight’s debate are the same as those set for the presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris three weeks ago and the Trump-Biden debate in June.
At the beginning of the event, the moderators will introduce the candidates in the order of the existing party, with Walz leading the way, according to CBS News. There will be no opening statements, and campaign staff will not be allowed to interact with the candidates during the four-minute commercial break.
Walz will stand backstage to the left of the stage, which will be to the right of the audience screens. Meanwhile, Vance will be on the podium to the right of the stage but to the left of the people’s screens. Candidates will be given two minutes to answer the question, two minutes to respond, and one minute to rebut. Candidates may receive an additional minute at the discretion of the moderators.
The main difference between the presidential and vice presidential debates is that a candidate’s microphone will not be muted when his opponent speaks tonight. However, CBS still reserves the right to turn off the microphone.
Also:
The debate is hosted by “CBS Evening News” host Norah O’Donnell and “Face the Nation” host Margaret Brennan.
Also:
For the first time since 2008, veep candidates will run for office.
(It’s hard for me to imagine talking about sitting down. How does one touch properly?)
I tried to be more opinionated (the BBC was good), but I thought Politico was the best take, despite being so personal. “Expect a slugfest”:
Like his running mate Donald Trump, Vance prefers to take offense, turn his opponents against them and blur the line between personal and political attacks. Walz, on the other hand, can be aggressive when attacking his opponents, but he often leans on his personal nature to address tough questions about his record. Both men struggle at times to hide their anger, and with a lot of bad blood between the two of them – caused mainly by Vance’s attack on Walz’s military record and Walz’s fight to call Vance ‘weird’ – don’t be surprised if things turn sour.
(Not to mention sleeping on the couch, in which Walz happily participated.)
So I’ll sit back and watch what happens. Enjoy!
NOTE Yes, now I think the first question is about Middle East policy, where both parties are competing to show Israel’s culture (Vance is destroying Trump’s performance-based reputation by not being a warmonger like Biden. / Harris, oh well).
