From Politico’s EU morning newsletter:
VDL REPRESENTS FOREIGN DISTRIBUTION FACILITIES: Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU should consider legislation on “return zones” in third countries to speed up the removal of undocumented migrants, in a letter to capitals ahead of a gabfest of EU leaders later this week.
Alignment of dismissal policies: The EU is not doing well in removing illegal immigrants, von der Leyen said in a letter, released to the media on Monday evening. Only about one in five non-EU citizens ordered to leave did so. Tackling this requires “a new legal framework to increase our capacity to act,” said von der Leyen, adding that revisiting the EU’s failed 2018 attempt to unify deportation policies will be an immediate priority for the next migration commissioner.
The best: The proposal for third-country deportation centers, in line with Italy’s controversial new move to move migrants to Albania, would mark a sharp new shift in the EU’s approach to migrants. Last week, as Playbook reported, Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson downplayed the possibility of deportations to the camps, adding that no one had officially suggested this. Now, in writing, von der Leyen points to the Italian initiative in Albania as an opportunity to “learn from this practice.”

****** A complete news report about the Binyamina attack and *not* one mention that it was a military base and that the 67 wounded were all IDF soldiers.
Making it appear that Hezbollah attacked civilians is a blatant attempt to further justify the US-Israeli war in Lebanon.

****** Israel rushes to provide anti-missile shield Financial Times. The best story. The independent media were all over the “US to provide [ineffective because no way enough missiles] THAAD air defense issue yesterday. This lead story is a bit broad. The THAAD system will require ~100 US troops to operate it. How long will it take to get to Israel? The arrival and deployment of THAAD is a decisive step. Israel will not attack Iran until it is contained. Remember that the point is not just any limited protection it provides, but the US military as a triwire. If it has radar, I think it should be moved to sea, which = time. Any reader thoughts? Will this take (or be made to take) so long that it puts revenge before the election? The good thing is that Judge Napolitano reported near the end of the new interview with Jeffrey Sachs that Channel 14 in Israel reported that this attack will come before the US election.

Between Russia and Iran all is well that sums up the Indian Punchline. Bhadrakumar is very uneven. Last week, he said that Israel will not attack Iran. I’m not sure I’m buying the thesis here, that Pezeshkian is still rationally driving the bus as far as Middle East policy is concerned (that doesn’t mean, BTW, he won’t be a mediator). Pezeshkian was one of the main voices against Iran’s retaliation based on the noises the US was making about Iran’s good fortune. Pezeshkian has since had to eat a ton of crow and admit that the US lied to him. Some commentators have suggested that Pezeshkian is so depleted that he is on his way out. Military decisions are the result of the Supreme Leader.
