The reality of Ethiopia today

More than 6.1 million malaria cases, and 1,038 deaths, were recorded in the country this year at the end of September, compared to 4.5 million cases, and 469 deaths, in 2023. Worse, cases are likely to increase significantly over the next few months because the high malaria season, driven by the annual rains, begins in September and ends at the end of the year.

“We’re regressing very quickly – we’ve gone back ten years,” said Fitsum Tadesse, lead scientist in charge of the malaria program at the Armauer Hansen Research Institute in Addis Ababa, the country’s capital.
