Paula Jayne Byrne, Lady Bate…isa British historian, novelist, and literary critic.

Byrne has a PhD in English Literature from the University of Liverpool, where he also studied for an MA, and a BA in English and Theology from the West Sussex Institute of Higher Education (now Chichester University).

Byrne is the founder and CEO of a small charitable foundation, ReLit: The Bibliotherapy Foundation, dedicated to promoting literature as an adjunct therapy in the toolkit of clinicians dealing with stress, anxiety and other mental health conditions. She is also a practicing psychotherapist, specialist in couples and family counselling.

Byrne, from a large Roman Catholic family in Birkenhead, is married to Sir Jonathan Bate, a Shakespeare scholar and former Provost of Worcester College, Oxford.
